Design Joint

What should be considered in parallel with H.S.S  in the subject of structural steelwork structures is design of beam connections to this type of column. During previous years, numerous methods have been proposed for different types of beam connections to column in different countries. 
By studying and comparison types of joints in references and codes, we succeed in proposing modern and efficient joint called ConXL prepared by CoXtech Company in 2010.  The mentioned joint is characterized by outstanding efficiency and fast execution as well as agreement with code principles. 

DIFFERENT JOIN ON HSS

Pin Joint

Pin or simple joint is designed for carrying vertical load and has no moment in joint place. Actually, design and control of pin joint in H.S.S is the same as joint in column with closed section and having stiffener (made of quadrilateral plate) or with open section (I), (the opposite picture).

Rigid Joint

Rigid joint is able to carry shear force yielded by vertical load, as well as moment made by lateral load (earthquake or wind) and vertical one.

RIGID JOINT ON HSS SECTIONS

An important thing in designing rigid joint of beam with I section to H.S.S column is the necessity of continuity plate in the connection place. Three methods have been used for installation of stiffeners in the connection place. Here below, you can find how these methods can be executed. 
All methods of stiffeners connections have important technical shortcomings, the most important ones of which are:
– Too welding and weakening of section ;
– Too long execution time;
– Difficult execution ;
– Too much wasting material.

Actually, by replacing a method which does not need any stiffener in the connection place, many of these difficulties can be solved and made great improvement in construction industry and using structural section. It can be claimed that super modern joint of ConXL which was designed in recent years and authorized by AISC is one of the best available options.  This joint which is used in automotive industry, not only has the benefit of omitting stiffener in connection place, but also increase the execution speed what can be found in ConXL page (read more about it).

Joint by Passing Stiffener (Diaphragm)

Passing stiffener is composed of two stiffener plates in the connection place which is passed through column and divides it into three sections. By installation of diaphragm, columns will be reinstalled in their positions.

Joint by Internal Stiffener

There are several methods for execution of internal stiffener:
1.   To unbend a side of column (for weld access)
2.   To use welding robots
3. To shear column, installing stiffener in the connection place and then re-welding the shear place.

Joint by External Stiffener

In this joint, stiffener is designed in such a way that can prevent local bearing along with transmitting the whole forces resulted by beam bending to column

Rigid joints can be executed by several methods, three of which are described as follows:

In those cases which column has not quadrilateral connection, stem of external stiffener plate in joint-less face can lead to making architectural limitation.

This limitation can be solved by putting a side plate along with top and bottom stiffener and removing the above mentioned stem.
